Sharyland ISD Continues Virtual Mentoring Program
The 2020-2021 school year is wrapping up, but Sharyland ISD is going full speed ahead with their RGV LEAD – Sharyland ISD Mentoring Program. Utilizing the RGV Mentor curriculum, counselors at the Sharyland high schools are supplying mentors with topics of discussion while meeting with mentees. Mentors are given an opportunity to meet with mentees once a month during the lunch period in which they can discuss career skills as well as life skills.
Janie Johnston Lopez, RGV LEAD, met with her mentees to discuss college necessities “behind the scenes”. The three young ladies she mentors had mentioned that their dorm rooms are going to be really small, so as a mentor, Lopez created a slide presentation with space saver ideas. In addition, she mentioned taking safety precautions while in college such as being aware of their surroundings, staying in lighted areas, and using common sense while they are away from home.
“I have truly enjoyed mentoring my three girls for the past two years. I highly recommend mentoring to anyone who wants to guide and share experiences with our youth.”
Sharyland ISD will conclude its mentoring program with a closing ceremony. Mentors will receive a certificate of appreciation which they will display at the last virtual meeting. Stay tuned for pictures of dedicated professionals who have given their time and effort to help enrich the life of a mentee.
