Brianna Valdez – Scholarship Recipient
RGV LEAD is pleased to announce that Brianna Valdez, La Feria High School, has been named recipient of the $5,000 RGV LEAD Scholarship for 2019-2020.
Brianna, who will graduate in the Top 10 of her class, is described as being a talented, goal-oriented, compassionate, humble individual and a positive role-model. She will be attending The University of Texas at Austin, where she plans to major in Biology with the goal of getting into medical school to become a doctor.
Brianna holds various leadership roles in school organizations and yet continues to hold a strong academic grade point average. She has invested many hours in community service and in extracurricular activities such as National Honor Society (Treasurer), Health Occupations of Students of America (Historian), Student Council (Vice President), Business Professionals of America, RGV LEAD Student Ambassador, Marching/Honors Band (Section Leader), Jazz Band, Yearbook Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Gold Stars Drill Team, VITA tax preparation volunteer, and FDIC Money Smart Ambassador. She has also served as a Cameron County/City of LaFeria Student Election Clerk.
One individual who provided a recommendation stated, “Brianna has displayed great leadership and character throughout various activities and organizations. She has invested time and poured her heart into efforts to help her family, school and community. Briana truly exemplifies the face of RGV LEAD, and she plans to continue exhibiting the invaluable skills, knowledge, and leadership qualities she has learned as an RGV LEAD Ambassador…” and in many other organizations. She will continue to do well throughout her journey at UT-Austin.
Brianna originally wanted to be an anesthesiologist; however, that changed after her mother was diagnosed with a rare cancer. As the family spent months traveling to get her mother’s treatments, Brianna began to do her own research and brought awareness to her family to educate them on cancer and help them make better life choices. Brianna said, “While the journey to becoming a doctor may be strenuous, I know one thing is certain: I will be that beacon of hope for my future patients and stop at nothing to give them the proper care they so truly deserve.”
It is an honor for RGV LEAD to award its 2020 scholarship to Brianna. She is an outstanding individual and we look forward to helping Brianna begin her journey and path in higher education. Best of Luck, Brianna!!
