La Feria High School TRPN Construction and Welding Pathways

May 2022 | Vol.3, Iss. 9

Robert Salazar, La Feria High School Agriculture Sciences Teacher/FFA Advisor, is well underway promoting the Texas Regional Pathway Network grant in welding with his FFA students. When asked to share what the students have been doing, he said, “These La Feria FFA members showed projects fabricated in class at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show and a project show at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Students fabricated these projects in their Agriculture Mechanics Welding Class and Construction Technologies classes, which have received funding from the TRPN Grant.”

He went on to say:

This year we had over 20 students fabricate projects for these shows. Students must design a project, calculate the items and cost needed to build it, fabricate it, then assemble a record book at completion of the project. Projects ranged from open fire BBQ pits to lawn and garden furniture, and even a whole hog BBQ pit trailer. We had many of our students place at both shows, and seniors who showed at the TAMUK show received a $1000 scholarship to the university should they choose to attend.

Robert Salazar, La Feria ISD 2020 Secondary Teacher of the Year, applies the seven components of a practical pathway to the welding and construction classes. Here’s wishing him and his students many future accolades!
