5Workforce Development Innovation ChallengeIndustry's fast rate of technology implementation has created a skills gap that requires mitigation via partnerships between academia, industry, and the community. The Office of Professional Education & Workforce Development (PEWD) , in collaboration with the Workforce Development Advisory Committee (WDAC) , has developed a comprehensive strategy to mitigate the skills gap and prepare our regional workforce to be more adaptive to the changing needs. We think that the Workforce Development Innovation (WDI) challenge holds the key. Companies that meet the criteria will receive the WDI award recognized by the community and industry leaders. This presentation will show how this innovative initiative, with support from industries and workforce development entities, will address the skills gap in the Rio Grande Valley. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley & Lozoya Consulting
6A Pipeline for Health Professional and Biomedical Science Research Careers: UTRGV BS in Biomedical Science (BMED) and Rio Grande Valley Bridge to Baccalaureate in Biomedical Sciences (RGV B2BMED) ProgramsA diverse healthcare and biomedical science research workforce are vital to the nation in remaining competitive in a global economy globally and in scientific discovery and innovation. Yet, populations from economically disadvantaged and/or rural areas and racial minority groups are significantly underrepresented in these field. One of the leaky pipelines in the pathway to healthcare professions and research science careers is the matriculation of students at community college (CC) institutions and subsequently to baccalaureate programs at four-year institutions. To address this issue, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), in conjunction with South Texas College (STC) and Texas Southmost College (TSC), have implemented articulation agreements to bridge students from the CC to UTRGV BS in Bachelor Science which is a pipeline for these careers and also developed the Rio Grande Valley Bridge to Baccalaureate in Biomedical Sciences (RGV B2BMED) Program, a research training program to support the transition of students. In this presentation we will introduce you to the BS in Bachelor Science and the B2BMED programs at UTRGV.University of Texas Rio Grande Valley
7Texas College Bridge for Mathematics and EnglishTexas College Bridge is an online, competency-based program that can be implemented to satisfy HB5 College Preparatory Courses. The math and English curricula were structured by postsecondary faculty to ensure they provide the ideal level of review and readiness for success in Texas college courses and meet Texas TSI standards. To date, greater than 70% of two- and four-year institutions and 400 school districts have adopted Texas College Bridge. Early efficacy data from Dallas College demonstrated that students who enrolled in entry-level math courses after completing the program had a higher overall passing percentage than college students who did not participate in Texas College Bridge. What's more, the program offers the ability to demonstrate empirical equivalencies to Texas CCMR indicators, including the SAT, ACT, and TSIA. Session participants will receive a guided exploration of the program and learn how to participate. The NROC Project & The Commit Partnership
